Central Coast Scenery:
The rugged coastline and treacherous ocean currents along the Monterey Bay proved too much for early Spanish missionaries seeking to settle the area. Those same jagged rocks and stunning cliffs will make the perfect backdrop for the pictures that you'll keep with you for the rest of your life.
While snapping shots along the coast you might run into a sea otter or two. Monterey has the largest population of sea otters on the California coast. Wildlife is abundant all along the Monterey Peninsula. You'll be sure to see seals, sea lions, and even migrating whales during the fall and spring months.
Further inland, the sparse terrain has been used as grazing land for centuries. Cattle wander over large 'ranchos' on lands that were reclaimed by local families. Where do you think Monterey cheese got its name? Many of these ranches still belong to the families who first established them. Horse riding, tours, wine and cheese tasting are widely available.
City of Monterey:
Downtown Monterey offers a terrific slice of mid-California. Check out Alvarado St. for great restaurants, bars, and quirky shops. Any and every service is readily available nearby. As the former capital of Alta California under both Spain and Mexico, this town is full of history. Before American rule, it was the primary port of call for all trade vessels entering and leaving California. It sports the first Californian theater, public library, printing press and newspaper. Downtown is full of historic 19th century buildings, and several artists and writers have called it home—such as John Steinbeck and Robert Louis Stevenson. Every year, it holds both the Monterey Jazz Festival and Monterey Pop Festival, events that have featured iconic performances from the likes of Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix, Louie Armstrong, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few.
Activities for Guests:
Outside of the ceremony, guests will have no trouble finding entertainment. Though much of the coast is rocky, five beaches line the shores of the bay. Guests may wish to explore the ocean via kayak or sailboat, or bike along the coast. Whale watching tours are also widely available. The Monterey Bay Aquarium displays all the underwater life you won't be able to see. Stop by to see large, fluorescent jellyfish and silver anchovies that swim around your head. Swing by the Fisherman's Wharf for a look (or a bite) of the day's catch and say hello to the colony of sea lions that frequent the area.
Monterey is the perfect setting for your wedding. It has everything you need and more.
