Downtown Clarksville
Clarksville is Tennessee's first incorporated city. Since before colonization, it has served as an important point in the tobacco trade along the Cumberland River. The historic downtown area has sought to preserve this history wherever possible. The sidewalks are made of brick, the street lamps replicate period lighting, and the central Franklin Street sports several historic buildings that date from the 1850s. Fine art is the cornerstone of Clarksville. The Roxy Regional Theatre was built in 1947, and public art can be seen scattered through the downtown area.
Several other buildings lend the area an incredible early-American feel. The Emerald Hill Mansion was built as a farmhouse in 1820, but it underwent two major renovations in 1900 and 1909. Fort Defiance at the end of Walker Street is a preserved Confederate outpost from the Civil War. It overlooks the confluence of the Cumberland and Red River. The L&N Train Station dates from 1890. It was long ago a central hub of Clarksville commercial activity. It is sung about in the Monkees' hit, Last Train to Clarksville. The City Hall features an amazing neoclassical arch constructed in 1941, although the building dates from the 19th century. The Eternal Flame at the junction of Franklin and Main commemorates Clarksville soldiers who have lost their lives in service.
Activities for Guests
Between your beautiful Clarksville wedding ceremony and reception, guests will find numerous nearby activities. The Dunbar Cave State Park, for example, sports 110 scenic acres. The Dunbar Cave was formed by springs, and the mineral waters that gush forth are thought to have healing powers. At the turn of the 20th century, it was a luxury hotel, but beginning in the '30s, it served as a big band concert venue. Country music legend Roy Acuff eventually purchased it and hosted some of Nashville's finest.
Several world-class golf courses have sprung up around the city. The rolling foothills and temperate climate have served to make it perfect for the sport. Golf Digest rated it 11th Best U.S. City for Public Golf. Historic walking tours are also widely available throughout the downtown.
Between the beautiful Appalachian foothills, the Cumberland River, and the historic downtown center, Clarksville is the perfect setting for your wedding.
